This is a poem (in Spanish and English, but preserving Spanish title in both versions) inspired in one of the awezomes selfportraits of

ADIOS

Adiós es una palabra hecha para decirse a solas
un compromiso contigo misma
que no puedes pronunciar mirando a los ojos
al amor que estás despidiendo.

Cuando una mujer decide quemar sus naves
lo hace en silencio,
sin grandes alharacas,
después del cada vez más soterrado ritual
de las lágrimas al final de cada día
cuando su cuerpo no puede más
y demanda liberarse del dolor que la mantiene
varada en aquel lugar al que no puede regresar.

Entonces lo dice en voz baja, para sí misma:
Adiós
Eso es todo. Se acabó. Me voy.
Aunque él se haya ido antes que tú. Ahora es tu turno
de cerrar tras de ti esa puerta que él dejó abierta,
no repetir el error de la mujer de Lot
que no supo decirlo a tiempo
y quedó dispersa en el viento, girando sobre sí misma.

De entre todas las palabras cotidianas
que figuran en cada diccionario de cualquier idioma
"adiós" es la que más duele,
pero también la más poderosa si la pronuncias en silencio
como hacen los sabios;
es compromiso de amor con uno mismo,
potente coraza contra el impulso de mirar hacia atrás,
pero procurando quedarte con lo bueno,
Adiós!,
Adiós!
repítelo!,
con la misma convicción con que alguna vez gritaste: "Te amo"
pero esta vez por amor hacia ti misma
entonces estarás lista para remontar el vuelo
alto, alto, más alto,
hasta donde el pasado no pueda rasgar tus alas:

Decir Adiós, amiga,
es saludarte a ti misma.

ADIOS

Adios is a word meant to say to themselves
a commitment with yourself
